There are so many updates about the upcoming conference in Haiti, it’s hard to know where to start. Gail Mercer-MacKay and Carol White recently returned from a pre-conference site visit and here is what they have to share:
- “Haiti – We have Technology” – This was the cry from the students and teachers when the computer lab we funded last year finally opened last month. Gail and Carol were there to capture pictures the moment that students poured into the lab for the first time. This lab will not only serve the 300 students at Bethany School in Jacmel, Haiti, but will also be open evenings and weekends for the larger community to take lessons.
- An Education Program is Established – We have established a partnership with Union School. Union School is considered Haiti’s best private school; however, their tuition fees are completely out of reach for most Haitian families who often survive on $2 / day. The tuition fees we are raising will be used to send these young women and men to subsidized programs in the computer lab at Union School.
- More Sponsors Desperately Needed – We still have a small handful of girls who are not sponsored and who will not be able to attend the new Union School program in September. About 50% of our young girls are waiting for you to commit to raising $2,500 for support their tuition needs. Please read their profiles and work together to help make this happen. http://staging.iamcp.ca/wit-profiles/
- Are You Coming on August 11th? – Our conference is at the Best Western Hotel in Pétionville and we have an amazing line-up of inspirational speakers — all Haitians who have used education and technology to escape the cycle of poverty. The goal is to inspire the 100 attendees to pursue a STEM education so they can realize their potential, and then to connect them with Union School to make it happen. Sponsors who have helped to raise money are invited to attend for an amazing and heartwarming experience and one-to-one connection. There are both 2-day and 4-day options and the cost to attend is minimal. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more.
